Craftsman garage door openers have an interesting history that's worth knowing before you try to fix one. Sears sold them for decades under the Craftsman brand but never actually manufactured them. They were mostly made by Chamberlain. When Sears started struggling and eventually went through bankruptcy, parts and support became harder to find and then the brand was sold to Stanley Black & Decker.

Today's Craftsman openers are still largely Chamberlain-built products. This is actually useful information because it means most Chamberlain troubleshooting applies to Craftsman and most Chamberlain parts work as replacements.

But there are some problems that come up specifically with Craftsman openers - often older units - that are worth knowing about separately.

The most common Craftsman complaint - it just stopped

Door was working fine, nothing changed, now it won't open. This is the most common call for Craftsman openers and it comes down to a few specific things.

Motor capacitor failing. Older Craftsman units are particularly prone to this. The capacitor gives the motor its starting burst. When it fails, the motor hums but can't actually turn. Press the button, hear a hum, nothing happens. Test: have someone push up on the door at the exact moment you activate the opener. If it suddenly works with that assist - capacitor is the problem. They're cheap parts, $10-20, but you need to know how to safely discharge a capacitor before touching it.

Drive gear stripped. The plastic gear inside that transfers motor motion to the chain or belt - when it strips the motor still runs but nothing moves. Classic hum-but-no-movement situation. Pop the cover and look at the gear. Chewed up teeth, plastic debris inside the housing. Craftsman gear kits are available and since it's Chamberlain under the hood, finding the right one by motor model number is usually straightforward.

Logic board failure. Older Craftsman boards fail. Settings don't hold, intermittent behavior, door does things it wasn't told to do. This is increasingly common on units that are 10+ years old. Boards are available but they're pricier than the capacitor or gear, and at 10-12 years old the question becomes whether board replacement makes more sense than full opener replacement.

Remote programming - where people get confused

Craftsman remotes have used a few different systems over the years.

DIP switch systems - very old Craftsman openers have small physical switches inside the remote and inside the opener panel. You set them to the same pattern. No Learn button involved. These systems are old, the remotes are becoming harder to find, and the security is minimal.

Security+ system - Craftsman's rolling code technology, similar to Chamberlain's Intellicode. The Learn button on the motor unit is usually purple or orange. Press and release the Learn button, then press the remote button until the light blinks. Standard process.

Security+ 2.0 - newer version. Yellow Learn button usually. Same process but only compatible with 2.0 remotes. Trying to pair a Security+ 1.0 remote to a 2.0 opener won't work even though they look similar.

Knowing which system you have determines which remotes are compatible. If you're buying a replacement remote and it won't pair - check whether the remote generation matches the opener generation.

The "Protector System" sensor issues

Craftsman calls their safety sensors the Protector System. Two small units near the floor, send and receive an infrared beam. If anything breaks the beam while the door is closing, it reverses.

The most common Craftsman sensor complaint is one that works intermittently - sometimes the door closes fine, sometimes it reverses for no obvious reason.

Sunlight is the most frequent hidden cause. At certain times of day, sunlight coming through windows or the gap under the door hits the receiving sensor and overwhelms it. The sensor reads it as the beam being blocked. Door reverses.

If the intermittent reversal happens at the same time of day - especially morning or late afternoon - sunlight is almost certainly the cause. Angle the receiving sensor very slightly downward or shade it with a small piece of cardboard taped above it. Low-tech solution, genuinely works.

Loose sensor brackets cause the same intermittent behavior. Vibration from the door movement shifts the sensor slightly off alignment and occasionally breaks the beam. Tighten the mounting bracket and it stops.

Travel limits drifting on older units

Older Craftsman openers use mechanical limit adjustment - actual screws or dials on the motor unit that physically set how far the door travels up and down. These can drift over time, especially after the opener has been jarred or if the adjustment screws are loose.

If the door suddenly isn't closing all the way, or is stopping short of fully open, or is reversing when it reaches the floor - limits are the first thing to check.

The down limit controls how far down the door travels. Turn it in small increments toward more travel if the door stops short. If the door reaches the floor and reverses - it's going too far, back the limit off slightly.

Up limit controls how far open. Door stops before fully open - increase it. Door slams into the stop at the top - decrease it slightly.

Small quarter-turn adjustments, test between each one. Don't crank it and see what happens.

When Craftsman parts are hard to find

This is a real issue for older units, especially pre-2019 when the brand went through its ownership changes.

The key is the motor model number, not just the brand. Since Craftsman openers were built by Chamberlain, the motor model number usually corresponds to a Chamberlain equivalent. Gear kits, drive belts, remotes, and boards that fit Chamberlain often fit the equivalent Craftsman model.

Look for the model number on a sticker on the motor unit itself - back panel or under the light cover. Search that number specifically, not just "Craftsman garage door opener parts." You'll find the Chamberlain equivalent parts much more easily.

If the model is old enough that even Chamberlain equivalent parts aren't available - that's usually the point where replacement of the whole unit makes more sense than continued repair.

Should you repair an old Craftsman or replace it

If the opener is under 10 years old and the problem is a specific part - capacitor, gear, remote - fix it.

Over 10-12 years old with a major component failure - get a replacement quote alongside the repair quote. A new opener installed runs $250-450 depending on type and features, comes with a warranty, and in most cases is quieter and smarter than what's being replaced.

Craftsman brand new openers (now Stanley Black & Decker) are decent products. But you're not locked to Craftsman on replacement - LiftMaster, Chamberlain, and Genie all install into the same opening with minimal fuss.

Craftsman smart openers - the AssureLink platform

Older Craftsman smart openers used a platform called AssureLink for WiFi connectivity and app control. AssureLink was discontinued and the app is no longer supported.

If you have an older Craftsman with AssureLink and the smart features stopped working - they're not coming back. The platform is gone. The opener itself still works mechanically, just without the smart connectivity.

Options: add a third-party smart controller like Tailwind iQ3 or a Chamberlain myQ hub that's compatible with your opener. These add-on controllers work with most openers including older Craftsman models and restore remote monitoring and app control through their own platforms.

Or replace the opener with a current model that has integrated smart features.

If the AssureLink app still shows the opener connected - it may be a cached state. The backend servers that AssureLink ran on are offline. The connection is not real.

Noise issues specific to Craftsman chain drive units

Craftsman chain drive openers are among the louder ones in use. Chain drives are inherently louder than belt drives but older Craftsman units seem to get particularly loud as they age.

Chain tension first. A loose chain slaps against the rail on every cycle and creates a lot of noise. The chain should have about a half inch of give when pressed at the midpoint, not more. Tension adjustment bolt is on the trolley.

Lubrication. The chain itself needs periodic lubrication - white lithium grease along the full length. A dry chain on an older Craftsman sounds like something is seriously wrong even when it isn't.

If noise is significant and the opener is old, the gear teeth and motor bearings may be worn. Worn internal components make more noise than new ones and it's not always fixable by adjustment. At that point belt drive replacement starts looking attractive - the noise difference between a worn chain drive and a new belt drive is dramatic.
