Garage Door Opener With Camera — Is Built-In Security Worth It?

Camera openers are now mid-range price points. Here's what the camera actually shows you, what it doesn't, and whether you're better off with a dedicated security camera instead.

Garage Door Opener With Camera - Is Built-In Security Worth It?

A few years ago, a camera in your garage door opener was a premium feature on high-end models. Now several manufacturers offer it at mid-range prices and it's becoming a more common question when people are replacing openers.

Here's what the camera actually does, what the limitations are, and whether it makes sense for your situation.

What the camera actually shows you

The camera on these openers - LiftMaster's myQ Smart Garage Camera and similar products - mounts on or near the motor unit, pointed toward the garage interior and the door opening area.

What you see: the inside of the garage, the door, and through the open door to the driveway when the door is up. The field of view is determined by the camera's angle and placement - motor-mounted cameras at ceiling level see a wide view of the garage floor and the area near the door.

What you don't see: anything happening outside the garage when the door is closed. The camera is looking inward, not outward.

This matters for understanding what problem the camera solves. It's a garage monitoring camera, not a driveway security camera. If your concern is watching for package theft on the porch - that's a different camera in a different location.

The use cases where it actually helps

Amazon Key deliveries. This is the biggest one. When an Amazon driver opens your garage for in-garage delivery, the myQ camera records the entry and provides a photo to confirm the package was left safely. This gives in-garage delivery a verified paper trail.

Checking garage status remotely. Did you leave the car running? Is a door to the house left open? Did the kids leave bikes in the middle of the garage again? The camera lets you verify these things visually rather than just seeing open/closed status.

Monitoring who's coming and going. The camera logs when the door opens and provides a visual record. If there's a question about when someone arrived or left - the footage is there.

Confirming the door is closed. Beyond the open/closed status check - actually seeing the door closed rather than just trusting the sensor reading. Some people want visual confirmation.

The limitations to know before buying

Indoor only. Camera faces into the garage. If the door is closed, you see nothing outside. For external monitoring you need a separate exterior camera.

Lighting dependent. Garages are often dark when the door is closed. Most opener cameras have night vision or an IR mode for low-light conditions, but the image quality in a dark unlit garage is noticeably lower than in good light.

WiFi dependent. The camera streams through WiFi. In a garage with weak WiFi signal - the same issue that affects myQ connectivity generally - camera streaming may be choppy or unavailable. A WiFi extender in the garage addresses this for both the opener connectivity and camera streaming.

Subscription for full features. myQ camera recording history - more than the most recent clips - requires a myQ subscription. Live view may be available without a subscription but extended recording history is typically paywalled.

Camera vs dedicated security camera. A purpose-built security camera at comparable price has better resolution, better optics, more flexible mounting, and often better software than a camera that's an add-on feature of a garage opener. If security monitoring is the main goal - a dedicated camera mounted in the garage alongside a standard opener may outperform an opener-camera combo.

Which openers have cameras built in

LiftMaster's camera-equipped models are the most established. The myQ Smart Garage Camera is an add-on for compatible myQ openers - not always physically integrated into the motor unit but part of the myQ system. Check the specific model to confirm whether the camera is built into the unit or a separate add-on module.

Some newer Chamberlain consumer models include camera capabilities in the app through third-party integrations rather than a physical camera on the unit itself.

Genie's Aladdin Connect platform has less integrated camera support as of 2026.

The price difference

A mid-range LiftMaster belt drive without camera - roughly $350-400 installed. The same or comparable model with camera capability - add $50-100 for the camera module if it's separate, or the camera model may be priced $75-125 higher than the non-camera equivalent.

For that premium, weigh it against: buying a dedicated $50-80 indoor security camera like a Wyze or Blink and mounting it in the garage yourself. You get comparable or better camera functionality at similar cost, keeping it separate from the opener system so neither depends on the other working.

The honest recommendation

If you're buying a new opener and camera capability is offered at a modest premium - it's worth having for the Amazon Key integration and remote visual verification. Not transformative but genuinely useful.

If the camera premium is significant or you're specifically trying to solve a security monitoring problem - a dedicated camera gives you more for the same money and doesn't tie camera functionality to opener connectivity.
