Short answer - more dangerous than most people realize, and in ways that aren't immediately obvious.

The cable snapped. The door is sitting crooked. Your first instinct is probably to figure out if you can just keep using the door until someone comes to fix it, or maybe try to fix it yourself over the weekend. Here's why both of those are bad ideas.

What the cables actually do

Two lift cables - one on each side - run from the bottom corner brackets of the door up to drums mounted on the spring bar above. Every time the door opens, the cables wind onto the drums in sync with the spring rotation. Every time it closes, they unwind.

They're not just guides. They're the mechanism that translates spring energy into balanced door movement. Both cables working together is what keeps the door moving evenly - both sides at the same rate, the door staying level throughout its travel.

When one cable fails, all of that changes immediately.

What happens when one cable breaks

The side with the broken cable loses its mechanical connection. The spring on that side still has tension - potentially a lot of it - but now there's nothing managing how that tension releases. The door drops on that side, sometimes dramatically. It hangs at an angle, putting uneven stress on every other component connected to it.

The remaining cable on the other side is now taking load it wasn't designed to carry alone. The spring tension that was balanced across both sides is now trying to pull through one connection point. The drum on the broken-cable side may have already been damaged by the sudden release.

And the door - sitting crooked, under unbalanced spring tension - is unpredictable. If you try to operate it, the already-stressed remaining cable could snap too. That leaves you with a door under full spring tension and no cables at all. A door in that condition can drop suddenly and completely.

The specific injury risk

People get hurt with broken cable situations in a specific way. They see a door sitting crooked and try to manually straighten it or push it back to level. Or they disconnect the opener thinking they'll lift it manually.

Can you use the door at all

No. And this applies to both opener use and manual use.

Opener use: the opener will try to move the door. With unbalanced tension and a crooked door, the trolley arm takes force it wasn't designed for. Track hardware takes abnormal stress. The opener motor works against the unbalanced load. In the worst case, the door jams in the track or comes down unevenly and hard.

Manual use: you're handling a door under abnormal spring tension without the cable as a controlled release mechanism. This is the situation where unexpected things happen fast.

The door stays where it is - closed if possible, open only if that's where it ended up - until the cables are replaced and the spring condition is verified.

What about the spring during a cable failure

Cable failures and spring failures often happen around the same time because they're the same age. A spring at the end of its life, cables at the end of their life - whichever fails first takes the other one closer to failure with the additional stress.

After a cable replacement, a good tech checks the springs. If the springs are borderline, addressing them at the same visit prevents a second service call in 3 months. How urgent is the repair

Same day or next day if at all possible. If the door is currently open - it can't be secured until it's fixed. That's a security issue worth prioritizing.

Frayed cable vs snapped cable - different urgency, same outcome

A snapped cable is obvious - the door is crooked, something is visibly wrong. A frayed cable is the version that gives you a warning before it snaps.

Look at both cables periodically - especially the section near the bottom bracket where the cable attaches and the section where it wraps around the drum. These are the highest-stress points where failure usually starts.

Fraying looks like individual wire strands sticking out from the main cable body. The cable is steel wire and when the internal strands break, they poke out. A cable with visible fraying is not going to last. It's a matter of when, not if.

A frayed cable that you catch before it snaps means scheduling a replacement at your convenience. A frayed cable that you don't catch snaps at an inconvenient time - possibly when the door is in motion, possibly with someone nearby.

Improper drum seating. If a cable winds onto the drum incorrectly - unevenly, in the wrong groove - it wears at the contact points faster than it should. This can happen after a previous repair that didn't get the cable seating right.

Spring failure that wasn't addressed promptly. When a spring breaks and someone keeps operating the door, the cables take abnormal load. That accelerated wear shortens cable life significantly.
