How Long Does Garage Door Installation Take? Timeline From Order to Finish

Two separate questions β€” lead time from order and installation day length. Both matter and neither is what most people expect. Here's the full timeline from order to working door.

People ask this question most often in one of two situations. Either something happened to the current door and they need to know how long they'll be without a functioning garage. Or they're planning a new build or renovation and need to account for the door in their schedule.

The answer has two parts - how long until the door arrives, and how long the installation day itself takes. They're very different numbers and both matter.

Part 1 - Lead time from order to delivery

This is the part that surprises most people. You don't pick a door today and have it installed tomorrow. Garage doors are manufactured to order for most residential applications and lead times vary significantly.

In-stock standard doors - some distributors carry a limited selection of common sizes and styles in stock. If your opening matches exactly what's in stock, installation can happen within a week. But stock is limited and your specific size, color, and style may not be available.

Standard residential doors - most single and double car doors in common sizes and popular styles. Lead time typically 1-3 weeks from order. This covers the majority of residential replacements.

Specialty or custom doors - non-standard sizes, specific wood species, custom colors, carriage house with specific window configurations, contemporary aluminum full-view designs. Lead time 4-8 weeks or more. Custom manufacturing takes time.

Current market conditions - supply chain conditions affect lead times. During periods of high demand or supply disruptions, standard lead times can extend. Ask your supplier for current lead time at the time of order, not a general estimate.

What affects where in the range you land

Style - plain steel panels are faster than carriage house with decorative hardware and windows.

Size - standard sizes ship faster than custom.

Color - standard white and almond are usually fastest. Custom color matching takes longer.

Insulation level - basic non-insulated doors are often stock items. High-R-value triple-layer doors may need to be ordered.

Supplier - local distributors with their own stock versus those ordering directly from manufacturers have different timelines.

Part 2 - Installation day, how long it actually takes

This is the fast part. The installation day itself is usually much shorter than people expect.

Replacing an existing door - same opening, same size: Removal of old door: 30-60 minutes. Hauling the old door out of the way, removing springs, disconnecting opener, taking down panels.

New door installation: 2-3 hours for a standard single-car door. 3-4 hours for a standard double-car door. This includes hanging panels, installing tracks, mounting and winding springs, connecting opener, programming remotes, testing and adjusting limits and force settings.

Total installation day: most residential door replacements are done in 3-5 hours, start to finish. A morning appointment is typically done by early afternoon.

New installation with no previous door: Slightly longer because there's no existing hardware to work with or against. Add 30-60 minutes.

Complex installations: Non-standard configurations, low headroom conversions, converting opening sizes, side-mount openers, commercial-grade residential installs - can run a full day.

What happens during installation - what you should be present for

You don't need to watch the entire installation. But there are two points where being present matters.

At the start - to confirm the door being installed matches what you ordered. Color, style, size, windows or no windows. Easier to catch a mistake before anything is installed than after.

At the end - when the tech verifies the installation. The balance test should happen before they leave. Disconnect the opener, lift the door to waist height, confirm it holds. Our how to balance a garage door guide covers what this test looks like - you should see it done before signing off on the work.

Also confirm the auto-reverse test is done. 2x4 on the floor, door closes and reverses on contact. This is a safety verification that should be standard for every installation.

The opener situation - separate timeline or same day

If the opener is also being replaced alongside the door - most companies can do both on the same visit. The door goes in first, then the opener is mounted and connected.

If keeping the existing opener - it gets reconnected to the new door during installation. The tech will verify it operates correctly with the new door.

If the opener needs to be ordered separately - especially for higher-end models or specific features - it may arrive at a different time than the door. Coordinate this with your installer so both are on hand for a single installation visit rather than two separate ones.

What to prepare before the installation day

Clear the garage. Move vehicles out. Clear anything stored near the door opening - tools on the wall nearby, bikes leaning against the garage. The tech needs working room on both sides of the door and overhead.

Make sure the power outlet in the garage is accessible and working. Opener needs power for testing.

Have your existing remote or keypads ready to be reprogrammed. Anything that was paired to the old opener may need reprogramming for the new setup.

If the installation is for a new opener only - same preparation applies. Also have the WiFi network password available if it's a smart opener.

After installation - what to watch in the first week

New springs need to settle. The first few days of operation the spring tension may shift very slightly as the spring coils seat. This is normal and the balance test result at install may differ slightly from a test done one week later.

Lubricate everything after the first week. New hardware comes dry from the factory. A coat of white lithium grease on rollers, hinges, and springs after the first week of operation sets everything up for the long run. Our garage door lubrication guide covers exactly what to use and what not to use.
