How to Balance a Garage Door - The Disconnect Test Every Homeowner Should Know
Most people have never manually operated their garage door. They press the button, it opens. Press again, closes. The opener does everything and nobody thinks about what's actually happening with the door itself.
Until the opener makes a noise it didn't used to. Or the door slows down. Or a spring breaks and suddenly the door weighs a ton.
The balance test is thirty seconds and tells you more about your door's health than anything else you can do without tools. Here's how to do it and what the results mean.
What door balance actually means
The torsion spring - or springs - above your door store mechanical energy when the door closes. When the door opens, that stored energy releases and counterbalances the door's weight. A properly balanced door feels nearly weightless manually because the spring is doing most of the work.
When the springs are correctly tensioned for the door weight, the door holds at any height you leave it. Let go at waist height - it stays there. Let go at one foot off the ground - it stays there.
When springs are losing tension, the door gets heavier. The counterbalance weakens. The opener carries more load. And the door, when you let go at waist height, drops.

How to do the disconnect test
Close the door fully first.
Find the red emergency release cord hanging from the opener rail - the one that disconnects the door from the drive mechanism. Pull it straight down or at the angle it's designed to go. You'll feel or hear a click as the trolley releases.
The door is now in manual mode. The opener can run but it won't move the door.
Grab the door with both hands at the bottom and lift it to approximately waist height - roughly halfway up. Lift slowly and evenly.
Let go. Completely release the door.
Reading the results
Door holds position - stays where you left it, maybe drifts an inch or two at most. Springs are properly tensioned. Balance is good. This is what you want.
Door slowly drifts down - springs are starting to lose tension. Not a crisis yet but worth watching. Test again in 3-6 months. If it's dropping faster than last time, the springs are reaching the end of their life.

Door drops fast - springs are close to failing or already providing minimal counterbalance. This is the situation where the opener is working much harder than it should be and springs need immediate attention.
Door rises or shoots upward - springs are over-tensioned. Too much counterbalance. Less common than under-tension but it happens after incorrect spring installation. Opener fights the spring on every close cycle.
Why this test matters for the opener
People replace openers thinking the opener is the problem when the real issue is springs. The opener sounds strained because it's carrying load it wasn't designed for. New opener goes in with the same bad springs and starts wearing out the same way.
Conversely, a door with properly tensioned springs makes the opener's job easy. The motor barely notices the door. It runs quietly, efficiently, and lasts years longer.

How often to do this test
Twice a year minimum. Most people add it to their seasonal maintenance schedule - spring and fall. Takes 30 seconds and gives you a clear picture of where the springs are.

What to do if the door fails the balance test
Get someone out to look at the spring tension. This is not a DIY adjustment. Torsion springs are wound under significant mechanical energy and adjusting or replacing them without proper tools and training is how people get seriously hurt.
What a tech does: assesses the spring condition, determines whether adjustment or replacement is the right call, makes the change with proper winding bars, retests balance after the adjustment.
If adjustment fixes it - job done, springs may have more life left.

Re-engaging the opener after the test
After doing the balance test, you need to reconnect the door to the opener before using it normally.
Most systems reconnect automatically - close the door manually to the fully closed position, then activate the opener on the close cycle. The trolley hook catches the door arm as the opener runs and re-engages.
If it doesn't auto-engage - look at the trolley on the rail. There's usually a lever or hook that needs to be manually positioned. Consult your opener manual for the specific re-engagement procedure for your model.
Once re-engaged, run the door through a full cycle and confirm it's operating normally.
