How to Lubricate a Garage Door - What to Use and What to Avoid
My neighbor has been spraying WD-40 on his garage door every six months for fifteen years. Thinks he's maintaining it. The rollers on that door are some of the roughest I've seen on a door that age. WD-40 didn't maintain anything - it just temporarily masked the noise while accelerating the underlying wear.
This is genuinely one of the most misunderstood maintenance tasks in home ownership. Here's what actually works and why.
The product question - settled once and for all
White lithium grease - best overall choice. Available as a spray can or in a tube. Thick enough to stay where you put it, handles load well, doesn't attract as much debris as some heavier greases. Works in most temperature ranges. This is what professional garage door techs use most often.
Silicone spray - excellent alternative. Lighter than lithium grease, very clean application, doesn't attract dust and dirt over time the way heavier lubricants can. Works well on plastic components including nylon rollers. Good choice if you want minimal mess.
WD-40 - never. I'll keep saying this. WD-40 is Water Displacement formula 40. It was designed to displace moisture and loosen rust, not to lubricate. It evaporates within weeks, strips away existing lubrication as it goes, and leaves metal parts drier than before. Short term it quiets noise. Long term it accelerates wear. If WD-40 is the only thing in your garage, go buy one of the above before starting this job.
Axle grease or bearing grease - no. Too thick for garage door components. Attracts debris. Gums up the mechanism over time.
3-in-1 oil - not ideal. Too thin and evaporates too fast for sustained lubrication on these components.
What gets lubricated
Hinges. Each hinge connecting the door panels has a pivot point at the center - the part that actually rotates. That's where the lubricant goes. Not the flat plates, not the bolts. Just the pivot. Short spray or dab of grease on each hinge's center pivot. There are usually 10-14 hinges on a standard door depending on height.
Rollers. The stem - the metal shaft the wheel sits on - and the bearing area where the stem meets the wheel. Not the wheel surface itself. Not the track. The stem and bearing. Every roller on both sides.
Springs. Run a coat along the full length of the coil - both springs if you have two. The goal is getting lubricant between the coils not just on the outside. Apply, then run the door once to work it in.
Opener chain or drive screw. Chain drive - full length of the chain. Screw drive - full length of the threaded rod. Belt drive - skip this, belts don't get lubricated.

That's the complete list. Everything else is hardware that holds the system together - no lubrication needed.
What does NOT get lubricated
The tracks. This is the mistake that surprises people. The rollers roll along the inside of the tracks. If the track surface is slippery, rollers slide instead of roll, which is worse for both the rollers and the track. Clean the tracks if they're dirty - wipe them out with a rag - but don't apply lubricant to the track surface.
The bottom seal. Some people spray the rubber seal on the bottom of the door. Doesn't help the door's operation and can actually make the seal degrade faster.
Lock mechanisms. Oil-based lubricants in key cylinders attract dirt and eventually cause the lock to seize. Use graphite powder for locks.
The process step by step
Open the door fully so you can reach all the hinges and rollers in both vertical and horizontal positions.
Work one side at a time. Start at the top and work down - every hinge pivot, every roller stem.
Do the same on the other side.
Do the springs next - full length coat on each.
Do the chain or drive screw on the opener.
Run the door up and down 2-3 times. This works the lubricant into everything. You'll often hear the improvement immediately - squealing drops, movement feels smoother.
Wipe any drips off panels, the floor, the car if it's parked in there. White lithium especially drips if you applied too much.

When lubrication doesn't fix the noise
If the door is still grinding after lubrication - the bearing inside a roller is shot. No amount of lubricant fixes a failed bearing. Replacement is the fix. Full cost breakdown in our roller replacement cost guide.

Rattling that continues - loose hardware. Lubrication won't fix loose bolts. Socket wrench around all the track brackets and hinge hardware.
Grinding at one specific point in the door's travel - debris or minor bend in the track at that height. Clean the track thoroughly at that point, look for any dent or bump. Our why is my garage door so loud guide matches specific sounds to their causes in more detail.
Cold weather and lubrication
Standard lubricants thicken in cold. White lithium grease handles moderate cold reasonably well. In climates where temperatures regularly drop well below freezing, look specifically for a lubricant rated for low-temperature use.
The tell is a door that runs fine in summer and gets sluggish or noisy in winter. Often it's just lubricant that's gone too thick. Re-lubricating in fall with cold-rated product prevents this.
